Take an active role to keep your state clean—participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program. KDOT started the Adopt-A-Highway program in December 1989, with the first pickups starting in April 1990. Participation in the program ranges from church and civic organizations, clubs, families, youth groups, employees from businesses, and much more.

Stipends Now Available to Organizations Participating in Cleanup Program

Organizations have been helping keep Kansas clean for more than 30 years through participation in the Adopt-A-Highway program. With increased amounts of trash along the highways and limited staff, KDOT has created an incentive stipend for groups that actively participate in the program. The stipend is $190 per highway section, which is generally two miles long. Adopt-A-Highway groups receiving $600 or more in payments in a calendar year will be issued a 1099 tax form. Groups will be able to submit a request for payment after completing a highway cleanup. The group will submit forms identifying the location, date, number of volunteers, number of bags, and before and after photos of the site. All groups go through the standard process to adopt a section of highway. New groups will sign an agreement, receive safety training information, and follow procedures when scheduling a cleanup. Existing groups will continue to follow existing procedures. State employees and their families are welcome to participate in a group, but are not eligible to receive stipends.

Adopt-A-Highway Resources

Sponsor-A-Highway

The Sponsor-A-Highway program provides civic-minded businesses the opportunity to financially sponsor litter removal on designated state highways. Sponsorships provide the funding for each mile of sponsored highway to be picked up, by a KDOT-approved vendor, 12 times a year.

Participating in the program gives businesses the opportunity to be recognized for their civic pride and their sense of community responsibility. The program provides for cleaner highways. It also allows KDOT to use funds allocated for litter removal to improve Kansas roads.

KDOT has partnered with Adopt-A-Highway Litter Removal Service of America, Inc. for the Kansas City metro region and Adopt-A-Highway Maintenance Corporation for the Topeka, Lawrence and Wichita metro regions. These national companies possess more than 20 years of experience each.

Signage

Sponsors are recognized with color signage, featuring the company name and logo, that places your company in front of thousands of potential customers daily.
