The Kansas Airport Improvement Program (KAIP) helps airport sponsors improve and maintain the state’s public-use airports. 

Program objectives include:  

  • Maintain runways in "very good" condition 
  • Minimize surface travel time to air ambulance pick-up locations 
  • Prioritize safety 
  • Enhance airport and community economic development appeal 

Eligibility 

The program is open to public-use airports in Kansas as defined in K.S.A. 75-5061. 

Project Categories 

KAIP projects fall into four categories: 

  1. System Preservation Projects: Maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation to keep existing facilities in good condition. 
  2. Modernization Projects: Increase capacity, resolve line of sight problems, and create new facilities. 
  3. Equipment and Facilities Projects: Purchase equipment such as snow removal equipment, mowers, lighting, and fuel systems. 
  4. Design/Planning Projects: Evaluate and establish priorities for the airport’s continued use. 

Funding 

  • Maximum state participation is $800,000 per project, with two exceptions: 
    • New paved runway construction: up to $1.6 million 
    • Full-depth reconstruction of an existing paved runway: up to $1.2 million

Requirement 

All sponsors accepting KAIP grants must keep their airport open for public use for at least 10 years.
