KDOT established the Driver Education Reimbursement Program to provide financial assistance to drivers’ education providers to help individuals who may otherwise not have been able to participate. These courses cover traffic laws, traffic signs and defensive driving strategies to produce better educated and more experienced drivers on Kansas roads.

How it Works

  • Reimbursement: Driver education providers can get reimbursed up to $200 per eligible student after the student completes the program and submits the necessary forms.
  • Costs: Any fees above $200 are the responsibility of the student and the provider. Providers must reduce the enrollment fee by either the course cost or $200, whichever is less.

Note: This program does not cover Commercial Driver’s License, Defensive Driving, or Motorcycle training.

Eligibility

Students

To qualify for the reimbursement grant, students must:

  • Show financial need with a household income not exceeding 200% of the federal poverty level.
  • Be between 14 and 29 years old and a legal resident of Kansas.
  • Have a clean driving record (no suspensions, revocations, or restrictions).
  • Obtain a Certificate of Completion from a Certified Driver Education Instructor.

Providers

Providers must comply with Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) guidelines and maintain records for five years. They must:

  • Offer a KSDE-approved driver education program or a licensed commercial driver training school.
  • Verify that all students meet the eligibility criteria.
  • Keep records of eligible students for audit purposes.
