The Kansas Safety Corridor Pilot Program, an initiative of the Drive To Zero Coalition, targets Kansas highway sections to enhance road user education, enforce traffic safety laws, and update engineering strategies.
Four safety corridors were selected for the pilot program:
- U.S. 83/U.S. 50 in Finney County
- U.S. 69 in Crawford County
- I-135 in Harvey County
- U.S. 24 in Pottawatomie County
Locations were determined based on crash history, the availability of additional law enforcement, and input from local traffic safety partners. From 2016 to 2021, 513 crashes occurred on these corridors resulting in 35 deaths and 66 serious injuries.
During the pilot program, motorists will see targeted media campaigns, signage, and increased law enforcement within the corridors. These efforts are meant to raise driver awareness and improve driver behavior in these corridors. With more drivers choosing safer speeds, wearing seat belts, and avoiding driving while impaired, we expect increased safety for all road users along the safety corridors. The pilot program timeline is 2023 to 2028.
Buckle up. Slow Down. Drive Sober. Ditch Distractions.
