The Transportation Alternatives (TA) program provides federal funding to promote and enable use of alternative transportation methods, such as:

  • Pedestrian/Bicycle/Non-motorized transportation facilities
  • Safe routes for non-drivers’ infrastructure
  • Abandoned railway corridors to trails conversion
  • Safe Routes to School – construction and non-construction
  • Historic transportation facility preservation and rehabilitation
  • Scenic and environmental improvements

Funding is available biennially. The next round of funding will be in 2026.

Starting in 2020, Project Concepts became a requirement prior to application. This allows for eligibility determination and feedback from KDOT staff prior to submitting a full application.

Eligible Entities

  • City
  • County
  • Tribes
  • Schools & school districts
  • State agencies
  • Non-profits
  • Small MPOs (Metropolitan Planning Organization)
  • Non-urbanized areas of WAMPO (Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization) and MARC (Mid America Regional Council) regions. Visit the FHWA HEPGIS mapping tool for more information on FHWA adjusted urban and non-urbanized areas within MPOs.
  • NOTE on MPOs: Project sponsors within the Urbanized areas of the Wichita and Kansas City metropolitan regions are not eligible to apply for TA funding through KDOT. These regions receive their own portion of TA funds directly from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), which they program independently of this call for projects.
