Centennial Bridge

Project Description

As the only Missouri River crossing within a 38-mile area, Centennial Bridge is a vital resource for those who work and live in Leavenworth County, Kansas, and Platte County, Missouri.

On average, more than 14,300 vehicles use the crossing every day. Unfortunately, the existing bridge is outdated and limited in its ability to transport people and goods.

In 2011, KDOT began a multi-phase study to determine the future of the existing bridge. After conducting traffic, engineering, environmental, community engagement, and feasibility studies, KDOT determined the structure had exceeded its useful lifespan and that a new bridge was needed.

Project Benefits:

The new bridge will not be tolled.
Improving flood resilience in the area.
Providing combined use pedestrian and bicycle accommodations.
Doubling the number of traffic lanes.
Resolving Missouri River navigation challenges.

Scope	The new, four-lane Centennial Bridge will be constructed just to the north of the existing Missouri River crossing.
Project Timeline	The project is in the initial design phase, which includes surveying, environmental studies and permitting, preliminary roadway and structure engineering, and community engagement activities.

Can the existing bridge not be repaired?
The bridge is in satisfactory condition but does not meet modern design standards and has become functionally obsolete. A major repair project was required in 2011 to repair damage and deterioration to the bridge’s steel structures and roadway. Unexpected and costly repairs (outside of routine maintenance) will increase over time.
How is the bridge being paid for?
• The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) are the funding the development and construction of the new Centennial Bridge.
• The project is part of the Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program (IKE).
• Additional funding may be obtained from federal grants and municipal contributions.
• As a publicly funded resource, the bridge will be developed in a cost-effective manner that prioritizes sustainability and functionality.
Is new right-of-way required for the project?
A limited amount of new right-of-way (ROW) will need to be needed to build the new bridge on both sides of the state line. The project team will work directly with property owners and designated representatives to facilitate this process.
When will the new bridge be built?
Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2026 and completed in 2029.
Where will the new bridge be located?
The new bridge will be located just to the north of the existing bridge. This will allow the new river crossing to utilize existing roadways.
Why do we need a new Centennial Bridge?
The existing bridge is nearing the end of its useful life and major repairs to the steel structure will become more numerous and expensive over time. The new bridge will double traffic capacity, include a dedicated pedestrian and cyclist pathway, increase safety, reliability, and environmental outcomes, and create new commercial and community opportunities. It will also enhance transportation and security for U.S. Army Garrison Fort Leavenworth.
Why will the new bridge take so long to be built?
A project this size requires collaboration with stakeholders and agencies at the local, state, and federal levels, with each having their own guidelines and procedures.
