U.S. 69 Highway Study in Crawford County

Study Description

This project is a highway corridor study to evaluate the current and future needs of U.S. 69 in Crawford County. Stakeholder and public input, as well as traffic and safety data will be compiled and analyzed, with a goal of compiling a list of issues and opportunities for the highway. The study limits are from the intersection of U.S. 69 and K-103 in Cherokee County, extending approximately 18 miles to E 650th Avenue north of Arma in Crawford County.

PUBLIC INPUT OPPORTUNITIES ARE COMING SOON

KDOT plans to host several open houses in winter 2025, where the public can attend to review and provide feedback on potential design options for the U.S. 69 highway. The public will also be able to meet the study team, as well as learn about other projects that are being planned along the corridor. Details of the open house will be shared and posted to the website once scheduled.

How many crashes have taken place on this stretch of highway?
Between 2018 and 2022, 422 crashes took place along this stretch of highway. Of those 422 crashes, five crashes resulted in at least one fatality.
How much traffic uses U.S. 69 over this study area?
Daily traffic volumes range from approximately 5,500 to 15,000 vehicles. 12% of this traffic is semi trucks. The highest volumes take place between 7:15 – 8:15 a.m. and between 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
What groups/committees are involved in this study?
The Public Feedback Group has been established to provide input to KDOT regarding the study materials and potential outreach opportunities and to provide insight on other groups/organizations that could be invited to community outreach events. Stakeholder listening sessions are being organized for associated individuals/organizations. The Stakeholder Listening Session groups are: first responders, local government, freight, schools and transit, elected officials, and economic development.
What improvements are being planned for U.S. 69 highway in Crawford County?
KDOT is currently planning upgrades to some of the traffic signals, as well as speed feedback signs. Aside from these, there are no plans for this stretch of U.S. 69 highway. KDOT wants to collect community input and analyze updated traffic and crash data before making any decisions.
What is the difference between this study and the KDOT Safety Corridor initiative?
This study is aimed at gathering community input regarding the challenges and possibilities facing the U.S. 69 highway in Crawford County. The KDOT Safety Corridor initiative is focused on identifying extra resources to enhance safety – like additional signage, speed management innovations and promotional campaigns.
When will construction begin?
There are no construction projects associated with this study. Once community input and data collection has been gathered and analyzed, KDOT will decide on the next steps for the study.
