KDOT Safety Planning and Engineering develops and implements strategies for road safety across the state. Through our combined efforts in safety planning and engineering, we support the goals of the Drive to Zero initiative. Our ongoing commitment to innovation and collaboration helps make Kansas roads more secure for everyone. 

Safety Planning 

  • Data Analysis: Utilizing advanced data analytics to identify high-risk areas and prioritize safety improvements. 
  • Engagement: Collaborating with local communities to understand their unique safety challenges and develop tailored solutions.
  • Planning and Programming: Identifying and programming safety investment priorities for state and local roads.

Safety Engineering

Implementing infrastructure projects to enhance road safety, including: 

  • Intersection Improvements: Identifying and programming low-cost as well as geometric redesign of intersections to reduce conflict points and the potential for severe crashes.
  • Roadway Enhancements: Implementing measures such as rumble strips, guardrails, improved clear zones, and improved signage, lighting and pavement markings to enhance road safety.
  • Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety: Identifying and programming investments that reduce the potential for pedestrian and bicycle crashes.
