A field survey for proposed clear zone improvements on U.S. 183 in Kiowa County is set to begin around Monday, Dec. 13.
The Federal Highway Administration defines a clear zone as “an unobstructed, traversable roadside area that allows a driver to stop safely, or regain control of a vehicle that has left the roadway.”
The field survey will be from 7 miles north of the Comanche/Kiowa county line north to the U.S. 183/U.S. 54 junction at Greensburg. The length is about 8.65 miles. The survey will be based on the existing alignment.
The survey will gather information needed for detailed design of the proposed improvements. The survey is estimated to be completed by April 1, 2022.
A member of the survey crew first will contact property owners and/or tenants for permission to enter private property if needed. Survey activities will include the use of survey instruments on the ground to determine locations of existing features within the survey corridor.
Michael Small, P.S., Survey Manager, MKEC, will be in charge of this survey for the Kansas Department of Transportation.
