Positions Located in Topeka Headquarters

Rotational Training Program

• Interns will rotate through various sections within KDOT to understand their functions and how they work together.
• Sections include Road Design, Bridge Design, Traffic Engineering, Construction & Materials, Transportation Safety, District Construction Offices, and more.
• Interns may be placed in the Topeka or Lawrence office or a District Construction Office.

Traffic Engineering

• Gain experience in each section of the Bureau (Traffic, Traffic Control, Signing).
• Conduct traffic studies, analyze crash data, and draw collision diagrams.
• Work on permanent signing projects and review/design temporary traffic control plans.
• Attend a variety of meetings and field reviews, which may require overnight lodging.

Road Design – Topeka/Lawrence

• Work in design squads to prepare road projects for highway construction.
• Tasks may include operating a CADD workstation, developing engineering drawings and notes, checking alignments, preparing spreadsheets, calculating bid item quantities, and managing project documents.
